Researchers seek fix for bug destroying Pa. trees

STATE COLLEGE — Pennsylvania’s state tree — the eastern hemlock — is threatened by a bug in about three-quarters of the state’s counties. Local farmers hope to draw attention to the problem, and Penn State researchers are working to find a natural enemy to combat the bug — the hemlock woolly adelgid. …The tiny bug is blown between trees in the wind. It originated in Japan and first appeared in the eastern United States in the early 1950s. It sucks fluid from the hemlock’s pine needles and forms woolly, white sacs.
