UM School of Forestry continues to evolve after 100 years

Four years after the U.S. Forest Service was established in 1905 and 18 years after the Forest Reserve Act cleared the way for today’s network of national forests, a fledgling forestry program took root at the University of Montana. Edward Kirkwood was tapped to lead the newly named Department of Botany and Forestry, and a “short forestry course” was advertised in the Montana Kaimin.
