State-managed forests provide a steady supply of logs to Montana sawmills – but the Bullock administration is hoping its help can increase the harvest from federal, private and tribal lands as well. “We have really made it a priority to put logs on the trucks, keep our sawmills open and essentially help our watersheds and our forest health,” Gov. Steve Bullock said in a recent interview. “I think we’re seeing some significant things happen at the state level.” U.S. Forest Service and timber-industry officials compliment the Bullock administration’s initiative, which has committed or spent at least $5.5 million in state money toward the efforts. Whether it can make a difference soon enough for the industry remains to be seen.
