How British Columbia Gained By Putting a Price on Carbon

arlier this month, Ontario announced it will join the carbon cap-and trade-program that Quebec and California currently participate in. That makes Ontario the fourth Canadian province to put a price on carbon. Alberta taxes its largest carbon emitters, including oil sands and power producers. And in 2008, British Columbia became the first jurisdiction in North America to adopt an economy-wide carbon tax. Stewart Elgie, a professor of law and economics at University of Ottawa, has analyzed the results of that tax and describes them as “remarkable.”
